3.5 rounded up! I love a good mythology-inspired story and this one is so much fun. Highly recommend for fans of Percy Jackson (although I will say at some points it's a little TOO similar to Percy Jackson.....) who are looking to learn about more cultural mythologies!

Didn't care for this one, waiting to see more reviews to see what I missed/am not getting.
still true from up updates:I'm not thrilled with the one vague reference to the Spanish inquisition as a fight against demons-thank you for justifying religious persecution? Or with the lionization of Conquistadors. No Jewish or native characters appear, but still not comfortable.
Many thanks to S&S for providing the arc.

Solid children's adventure story with fun elements taken from Hispanic myths and legends. I just wonder if non-bilingual readers will get as much enjoyment of all the random Spanish words and phrases sprinkled throughout.
What a blast! And what a great kid Charlie is, and what an awesome team he and Violet make, figuring out the myth-based clues and what they mean, while fighting for their lives.
The story energy is pretty high, action is practically constant, and there’s lots of humour as Charlie finds out that the myths his grandmother told him are real, and with a ton of insight from Violet (and most of the investigatory work), has to find a way to fight an evil league intent on killing both of them. Equally important, Charlie has to figure out what friendship really is, and who he is. I am so going to read book 2 in this really fun storyline.

This was fine enough for kids who can't get enough of the Percy Jackson, action adventure, fantasy books. I appreciated the diversity of this and in learning a bit about a new set of myths; but it also read a bit repetitive: run into a bad guy, learn about him (or her), escape...run into a new bad guy, learn about him (or her), escape...repeat...
I did build towards something bigger though, and further adventures will be had!
