This is a thrilling mystery that hits close to home for Bree and Matt. The suspense is kept simmering throughout with twists and turns I surely didn’t see coming. I love that Bree is finally becoming more comfortable with her new role in the family and her slowly developing relationship with Matt. I truly enjoy this series and though this is the third in the series it can be read standalone just fine.

This has been my favorite of the series so far. I love the growth of the characters from book to book. The continuing story lines have me hooked. I love the twists and turns and misdirections. I thought I knew what was gonna happen, but the big reveal shocked me.

This series gets better and better. The mystery, thriller and love story aspects all weave together so beautifully. I’m obsessed, immediately starting book 4!

Drown Her Sorrows
3.5 Stars
Sheriff Bree Taggert and her consulting investigator, Matt Flynn, investigate the death of a woman whose body was found in the Scarlet River. As they delve deeper into the life of Holly Thorpe, Bree and Matt uncover the victim's fraught relationships with her husband, her sister, her employer, and her co-worker. Which one of the many suspects wanted Holly dead and why?
The pacing of Bree and Matt's latest investigation is a little off. After a promising beginning, the action slows with too much back and forth in the discovery and questioning of the various suspects. Nevertheless, the suspense ratchets up toward the end, and the final twist is worth the effort of sticking with the book to the end - kudos to Leigh for her skillful misdirection.
There is also some good character development for Bree and her family, as well as progression in Bree and Matt's romance. Unfortunately, this is still the weakest aspect of this series. Readers are presented with Bree and Matt's growing attraction, but the chemistry and intensity of emotion are still missing. Perhaps Leigh would be better off writing a straightforward mystery/thriller series without the romantic component.
In sum, this series has a great deal of potential. The characters are appealing, and the mysteries have their moments. I am interested in seeing how the relationships develop in future installments.
