"'May I tell you why it seems to me a good thing for us, to remember wrong that has been done us?' 'Yes.' 'That we may forgive it.'"
Specters and poor choices, with a happy reversal in the end, set at Christmastime, of course. When our main character Redlaw the chemist is left without memories of the painful incidents from his past, he turns angry and bitter, "a man without a soul, as incapable of compassion, artistic sensitivity or spiritual understanding, as the abandoned waif whose neglected short life is equally barren of memories." These nasty emotions spread like a pestilence to those around him. (Perhaps it is best to forgive, not forget.) Overall, a nice little exploration of how the negatives in life can actually be a boon (and help us see the good things as truly good). You have to reconcile the sorrows with the joys. Gotta love a good redemption story.
"Lord keep my Memory green."

From BBC Radio 4 Extra:
Charles Dickens' last Christmas story is a vivid account of a man tormented by his past.
