In book two of the Inn Keeper Chronicles, Ilona Andrews continues with the story of Dina and her sentient Inn for aliens and all things unearthly. In this instalment, we get a more intimate look at how the Inn operates and the intricacies of the innkeeper’s position and role. This is the book where all my world-building questions from Book 1 were answered. Ilona Andrews expanded the world and explained all its nitty-gritty details in a way that in an engaging manner that didn’t disrupt the storytelling.
I enjoyed this book much more than Clean Sweep, perhaps because I had gotten accustomed to reading about aliens and this sci-fi world, which is not something I would ordinarily pick out. But also, this book was even better than the first one. I enjoyed the intense political intrigue and undercurrent of power struggles that was the peace summit.
On the romance side, I found the sudden allusion to a deep romantic bond between Sean and Dina awkward. The relationship could have been built up a little more for it all to make sense. As it was, there never were more than a few suggestive comments and one kiss between the two in the first book, so the sudden devotion in book two didn't make sense. To the author’s credit, they did try to provide some context for that later in the novel, but it was not sufficient.
I would definitely recommend this book to any fantasy enthusiast. The romance element is still not that strong for those who prefer romantasy but the plot more than makes up for it. This was a 4* read for me, up from the 3* I gave book 1.

This is actually my third read-through of this story. I originally read it on the author’s blog and then again when the digital version was published. Every version seems to have gotten a few tweaks so it’s almost like getting a new story. I love everything about this universe. The voice acting works well in this version, although I found some of the accents different than I had imagined, especially for the characters that originated in the Edge series of books. As a person from the region, I also found the Texas accents a little wrong, so I wish they would have gone more with standard American on those characters. It wasn’t enough to affect my enjoyment of the story generally.

Would have rated higher but really don’t like the main love interest
