I really enjoyed this story. It was read as part of our History Curriculum which is currently about Native Americans. Both my boys that listened to the story really enjoyed it. It had a lot of detail and information about the way the characters lived which was very interesting even if somewhat more difficult to read out load. The story was engaging and wasn't predictable for us. Lots to discuss and think about.
Well-written children's book of a Native American child prior to European colonization who has limited eyesight. A coming of age story. I read this as the same time as my son since it is part of the curriculum we're using for school. This is ideal as a reader for elementary aged kids.
This book was assigned as a reader for BYL5 but half way through my child asked if I'd read it with her so we finished it together...and then I started from the beginning to see what I missed. 10 out of 10 do not recommend this approach with books! :)
The book itself was interesting. I liked the back story of some of the characters and the details shared about the transition to adulthood. There was a section that my 10 yr old thought was 'creepy' but in the end I think everything smoothed out and it was a neat story.

We used this as part of our history curriculum. It was well written and thought provoking - many of the things discussed in the book, the skills, can be tested at home with you own family. Several tough topics were touched upon - death, invaders/strangers, being alone and scared.

Beautifully written! This made for a perfect read aloud and led to great conversations for an introduction to American History this year.
Kids and I enjoyed this one for the fast paced ending. Didn’t want to put it down and read the last few chapters in one sitting.

"...you can't really tell a story that you don't yourself understand."
I don't understand this book. I mean, I understand it, but then again, I don't. Which, might actually be a major theme of the book. What we understand and what we don't and how that adds to our personal characters, I mean.
