Woman on the Edge is a fast-paced, teeth-gritting, freaky domestic thriller centred around a new mother's spiralling mental health during the anxiety-fueled, hazy post-birth weeks. Nicole is a corporate CEO who seemingly has all the stepping stones to motherhood success: financial stability, a loving husband, a close best friend, and a business that focuses on women's wellness. How could she, of all the new mothers in the world, end up terrified on a subway platform, ready to hand her baby to a stranger's safekeeping? Morgan, the stranger, is socially isolated and longs to be a mother, when her life is turned upside-down by Nicole's actions.
I'm giving this a solid 3/5 stars as a domestic thriller. True, it's pure escapism and a quick read, however I did guess 'whodunnit' about twenty pages in. Definitely not quite in the echolon of Gone Girl or The Women in the Window. I would recommend Woman on the Edge for anyone looking for an easy, thrilling read without too much weight to it.

L'ambientazione è un tempo, quello in cui si diventa genitori - nello specifico madri - e tutto intorno viene ribaltato. Il romanzo di Samantha M. Bailey gira intorno a questa condizione, narrata da diversi punti di vista. Certo, trattasi di thriller, per cui ci sono eventi e cattivi che rendono la situazione della neomamma ancora più complicata di quello che già sarebbe.
Un romanzo piacevole, a tratti un po' cupo, ma mi ha intrattenuto e fatto pensare alla mia condizione di genitore - certo un po' diversa - e alle piccole e grandi paure che han generato in me il diventare responsabile di un altro essere umano. Che, comunque, restano decisamente minoritarie rispetto alle cose positive che ne sono derivate.
