This book was in my Kindle for awhile and coincidentally I decided to read it about the same time the series on Netflix came out. People have reported being torn apart, crying, and loving the acting. Well, the book is excellent and the love pours out of it. I teared up a few times but did not wail. If you don’t want to ugly cry, avoid the series and read the book.

Listened to this on audible, read by Tembi herself. Such a sad but beautiful story of love and loss and family. Her words paint of vivid picture of her travels to Italy and her family's story. I was sad for it to end.

I’m torn between 3 and 4 stars for this. The story was well written and really beautiful. But the story jumped around so much between chapters and sections it was difficult to track. I feel as though the story would have been more impactful and enjoyable if it followed the path that the events happened. Granted, I think that much build up would have made it a more intensely sad book.

I love learning other people’s stories. This was told beautifully and I loved the weaving in and out of past and present. Mostly I appreciated the unveiling of the stages of grief which made her story raw and relatable.

Tembi Locke went to Italy for experience and culture, but what she found was a home she didn’t know she needed.

The day Tembi met the handsome Saro is a day she will never forget. The talented chef swooped her off her feet with his acts of devotion and love; however, their love story wasn’t without its share of difficulties. Their marriage was met with disapproval, and Saro was essentially cut out of his family’s lives. With their hearts broken, Tembi yearned for the day that the wedge would be healed, but that wish would send her on a journey of loss, love, happiness, sadness, and, of course, Italian food!

I really enjoyed listening to Tembi’s story and can’t wait for the film adaption to be released. My favorite part was when both her parents and Saro’s saw the way they loved each other and how Italy and America welcomed them into their world. It was refreshing to listen to someone’s story where family is at the center, and rather than finding another romantic love, Tembi focused on the love that surrounded her and grounded her. I loved how this memoir transitioned from the beginning of her and Saro’s relationship to the middle, and then the end.

My only negative remark is that I feel like the book was rushed at the end and didn’t finish as I thought it would. Nevertheless, if you enjoy non-fiction and are looking for a book that will make your mouth water and heart overflow, this is a book for you!

Beautiful thoughts and reflection on love, loss, grief, and healing. Some aspects of Sicily she got spot on, but other parts she relied on stereotype and the American imagination of Sicilians being stubborn, mobbish, and backward.

Italy, check. Food, check. Love, check.

A breathtaking story of love, loss, and personal discovery. I was hooked from the first page. Set in Italy, this memoir follows a women's path to healing after a devastating loss. She learns the power of food, family, and simply love in this journey across three summers in Sicily.

Tembi gave me hope as she battles the loss of her husband. I was reminded that life doesn't always (or more like, doesn't usually) turn out as we expect. Sometimes, we must rebuild "from scratch" to learn who we truly are. Heartbreaking, tender, and simply GORGEOUS.

I devoured this book. It is both a memoir to her late husband but also serves as a beautiful love letter to Sicily.
