Sad, sensual, life-affirming. Loved it.

A beautiful, heartbreaking book that feels so honest. Some parts of this book are incredibly sad to the point where I was crying reading them but as the book progresses you can feel the hope of the author. It’s better have loved as lost than to have never loved is very much a theme in this book.

This was a story of a grieving mother. While her story is touching, I wasn’t overly engrossed and didn’t come away feeling empathy. I would have expected my heart to break reading this. Something was missing.

I LOVED this book. It might have been the parallels to my own life - family roots in Sicily, love of good food, cancer, adoption, and making a home in LA, but it could also be the poetic and romantic way the story is told - full of hope and longing. My heart was wrenched open and then stitched back up. Beautiful.

I love this story as much as I loved the series. Would read again!

This book really was not at all what I thought it was going to be, but I really loved it. It made me miss study abroad and Italy. It also made my hungry with all the talk about Italian food and recipes. I think the author did a really great job talking about love and grief and family.

This memoir took me on Tembi’s journey through love, loss, grief and happiness. I love Sicily so of course this book tugged at my heart; it was so accurate!
I also liked the structure and how it wasn’t framed as a plot only focus on loss/sadness.
I enjoyed the beautiful scenes this book set and can’t wait to watch the show.

Note to self: read this while at a training program or else I would have finished faster for sure :)

From Scratch was such an enjoyable memoir. Tembi and Saro shared an amazingly beautiful love story and you could feel how honest and true their love was with each sentimental sentence. However, this book was more about family as a whole with touches of cultural identity/cross cultural marriages. As I was reading, I missed Italy and longed for an intimate cooking session! I would definitely recommend this book, but maybe when I pass it along to a friend, I'll give a box of tissues to accompany.

A beautiful (but heartbreaking) story, beautifully told. Be prepared to cry, to laugh, and to want to cook afterward (even if that’s not usually your thing).
