My heart feels for Anisa (not sure of the spelling). I did also believe much of the bad around me, I caused. I'm glad she had someone tell her that the opposite should also be true. Her life would have been tough, and I'm happy she had support.

A story that resonated very strongly with me as someone who teaches children like this: ostracized, traumatized, and often feeling extremely alone, grasping for something that makes sense. Well worth the read and made my heart soar.

Nicely written tale of a displaced Lebanese girl coming to terms with herself and her world through Welsh tales and an owl. Whether it's SF or not depends on how you interpret her "powers": as literal manifestations, or as the sort of thing any teenager might think coinciding with stuff happening in the real world.
Highly recommended.

Listened to Levar Burton reads this and I loved it. What a lovely, sweet little story about magic and owls.

A coming-of-age story about a girl of mixed English - Lebanese heritage, who had to move to Scotland to escape the horrors of war. In Glasgow, she has to deal with acceptance of her situation, the new surroundings filled with people who look at her strangely and even fear her because of her dark skin and piercing black eyes, as well as acceptance of herself as a person. During the Israeli bombardment, waiting in the bomb shelter, her family spoke about what was happening in the country and when she asked them to explain it to her, they simply said that the owl killed the rooster. That day Anisa became fascinated with owls, and learns a lot about them, finding traces of herself in them.
