If an Olympic gold medalist is going to make a foray into fiction, it makes sense that she'd stick with her sport. The Flip Side doesn't stray far from other YA gymnastics fiction, much of which features protagonists who are torn between the discipline and glory of competitive gymnastics and the desire to experience the joys of 'normal' teenage life. Here, Charlie is managing better than most—but she's doing so by lying to her 'real-life' friends, who have no idea she's a gymnast.
It's cute, light, and pretty predictable. It's clear from the love interest's introduction that he will be just that; it's clear that Charlie's secret will come out and damage her friendships and budding romance; it's clear from the moment she decides to wear heels to prom that it's those heels that will cause a problem in her gymnastics. While I could have used a bit less predictability—and struggle to believe that she managed to successfully keep her secret for so long—it's a sweet read timed just right for the summer Olympics. I'm happy to see more gymnastics fiction aimed at slightly older teens (rather than middle grade) in the last few years.

Very enjoyable book! Really would love a second one. So fun with the gymnastics and Wrestling. Cute and quick contemporary read :)
This was a really cute, quick read. I’m a sucker for anything gymnastics related so when I found out this book was a thing I had to pick it up. It was interesting seeing Charlie juggle her gymnastics life with life as a normal teenager. And Bobby was a really cute, sweet love interest. One thing that annoys me (although I know it’s part of the plot) is when people get mad at Charlie for keeping her other life a secret, I completely get why she did. If I was her friend I’d be hurt for like a day but I’d get over it because it’s easy to see and understand why she was worried that people would only see her accomplishments instead of her as a person.
Got this for free from eddevise
I really enjoyed this book. I will def be getting a final copy of this just to see what the final chapter is like. I loved the character and also the story path that it went on. As a big fan of Shawn i could see elements of all the people that she competed it in this book and that was fun. I loved seeing gymnastics told in YA world and hope in the future she writes more.

All Charlotte Ryland wants to do is get good grades, make it through school alive and with friends, and have a good time (quietly, very quietly). All Charlie Ryland wants is Olympic gold. Can Charlotte keep her school friends from finding out she's a world champion gymnast? Can she keep up with her studies, her strict training schedule, keep her friends happy, and stay out of the spotlight until Olympic trials?
This standalone YA by Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson is a fun little romp. I thought with the Olympics coming up, this would be a nice palate cleanser after GRRM. It's not perfect - the dialogue is stilted (and at points way too politely adult), but the characterization is okay and the story is cute. It's not revolutionary or anything like that, but it was fun.

[4.5] This Book was super cute. Bobby was the full package (except for the fact that he’s 5’7”). I thought he conclusion was a little short and ended too abruptly, but other than that , I really liked it.
This story capture your attention with a look at life of an elite gymnast trying to live a normal teen life. It was a story of friendship and decisions that can change who and what we are in an instant.
A quick, cute book that was exactly what I needed reading-wise. I loved all the characters in this book, and I liked that they felt like real teenagers. So glad I finally got to read it.
