I am going to be totally honest with you on this one. I am very torn with my feelings about it. On one hand I like it and think it is really cute while on the other hand I think it is a little bit depressing. I guess I should explain that a little bit...
I think the monster is super cute. He looks like something I just want to pick up and hug. If I think that, I am sure that kids who read or have this book read to them will think the same thing about this little guy.
I also like the artwork. I don't really know why, but there is something about it that I find pleasing and nice to look at.
What I find depressing about it though is the storyline. The story is about the little love monster and how he has no friends. The love monster then sets out to find some friends, and he just about gives up. Then, when he has pretty much given up all hope of finding a friend, he finds another monster.
I understand the underlying message of this story, but I still think it is a tad bit more sad than it needs to be.

Sweet book about there being someone for everyone- and that maybe being cute isn’t the most important thing in the world. This is one I want to read to my cutie often, so that she learns that isn’t nearly the best thing about her, and that when choosing her friends, cute isn’t something we need to take into consideration.

A sweet little book with cute, glossy illustrations. I was disappointed that the moral wasn't "Love yourself, even if you're alone forever. And ugly." No spoilers or anything, but that's not how it ends...
Love Monster lives in a world filled with soft and cuddly pastel animals and everyone loves them. But no one loves a red, googly-eyed monster who isn’t so cute. So Love Monster decides to head out and see if he can find someone who will love him despite not being cuddly. Love Monster searches and searches for someone like this. He even thinks he’s found them, but then discovers that he has not. He’s just about to give up, but learns some things are worth working hard to find.
Bright does an admirable job of creating a book that has a very large message without it consuming the story too much. She uses a narrator voice that is strong and individual which helps keep the book from becoming to sweet as well. Love Monster is a great character, primarily because he isn’t a complainer and refuses to just settle for a life alone.
Bright’s art is bight and large. Love Monster pops against each pastel page with the pages getting darker colored as the story progresses. Finally, night has fallen and the stars come out in a black sky and Love Monster pops there too.
Monsters and love, sounds like a great Valentine’s Day book for little monsters. Appropriate for ages 3-5.

Almost too cute for words. A lonely monster is not cute and fluffy so he goes in search of love.
This is a cute book with a love theme, so perfect around Valentine’s Day. I think the message probably is better suited for teens and adults, but it can be a fun read for pre-school age, especially if they love monsters, and early elementary in identifying a character’s emotions and actions.
