This book was incredibly well-written and the story was so good. It's a great coming of age, finding yourself story that includes a strong friendship that ultimately makes it through the turmoil. Thirsty is a powerful, sad and angry story about addiction, losing yourself and ultimately rebuilding your life. This book made me incredibly angry from start to finish and I think that's what it's supposed to do a little. Read the trigger warnings.

This very quickly turns from a light story of a teenage girl having a fun and idyllic summer with her best friend and girlfriend, to a dark narrative of deep seeded self hatred and insecurity in the world (also fun, right?) I love an unlikable narrator, but i can’t entirely say she was unlikeable, I just think she’s human. I did want to hug (or smack) some sense into her, but that’s entirely the point. As someone who has a healthy relationship with my friends, family, partner, and alcohol, I never found myself truly judging Blake, just rooting for her. Hammonds does a wonderful job of reminding us just how flawed and complex and ultimately wonderful humans are, and how it’s okay to not be okay, to need help, to rely on those around have your best interest at heart.

trigger warnings: alcoholism, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideations

We follow Blake, a young teenage girl who is spending the summer before her freshmen year of college with her girlfriend, Ella, and her best friend, Annetta. They are all trying to have nothing but FUN before settling down into their dorm rooms at Jameswell University.

The three friends are all pledging to get into this exclusive sorority called the Serena Society. A organization that is dedicated to connecting and supporting women of color that attend Jameswell. While in the process of pledging, Blake and many others become victims of hazing.

This is my second time reading a book by Jas Hammonds, the first book was “We Deserve Monuments,” which was hands down one of my favorite reads of 2023. Their writing style was so easy to read and addictive! I was annotating like crazy throughout this book.

I felt super connected to all of the characters, especially Annetta! As someone who is a chronic over thinker, and truly cares about my friends, I completed understood Annetta when it came to confronting/supporting Blake. It’s hard to tell your friend that something they’re doing, while they enjoy it, is extremely harmful for them. It’s a balance between caring for them and overstepping. We really got to see both sides of those feelings.

This is a heavy book about alcoholism, depression, anxiety and suicidal ideations. It delves into when you end of wanting to please everyone, it can be at the detriment of your own mental and physical health, without you even realizing. I 100% recommend this book!

First of all, amazing. This book deals with so much and it is centered around drinking and the complexity of relationships, and as someone who wanted to self destruct all the time as a teenager because of unstable coping mechanisms, I loved this book.

Truly a powerful story, check trigger warnings but I would suggest picking this up if you or anyone in your life has struggled with addiction, it's a truly honest take on it in my personal opinion
