Preface this to say that I am not a nonfiction fan. I listened to this for a book bingo board.
Overall, this memoir wasn't bad. I do however think that it could have been shortened (Yes, shorten a 200 page book) because it felt like it had a lot of repetitive information, especially when we got to the statements at the end of the book. Some of those statements were almost exactly the words Nichols used earlier in the book.
And although I am happy that she went on to have a successful collegiate career, there were many details of that section that were just not relevant to anything else. This overall felt more like an autobiography of her entire life since it started at 3yo and ended right before publication - I was expecting more of a focus here and felt some of the superfluous details could have been removed as I forgot all of them as soon as she finished saying them.
I do respect her for writing this and for her continued work in helping bring to light the issues presented here. I hope she continues to be a voice for women and to help other women who may not be able to voice their own pasts. Good for her!

Leaving this unrated. This isn't the best written memoir, but I'm glad that Maggie was able to tell her story. It's absolutely devastating and it took a lot of courage to do what she did to hold the gymnastics community accountable for it's treatment of young girls. I know this had to be a difficult book for Maggie Nichols to write. To revisit this time in her life couldn't have been easy. But what a story to tell! I'm so proud of her!

This was an interesting listen and I have always been interested in USA Gymnastics and the Olympics. I remember when all of this was happening and being glued to the news to learn the outcome. I will say that everything covered in this book is also covered in more detail in the Netflix documentary, Athlete A.
I know this is YA Nonfiction, but it doesn't go very in-depth. Maggie says a lot about the events, but she doesn't explore how those events made her feel. I think I would have liked it more if we had gotten that element.
