This was my first Philippa Gregory novel and I really wanted more from it. It felt too long and I couldn't root for the characters by the end of the novel. Poor Alinor just can't catch a break. By the end, I was really struggling with Alinor's saintly attitude, her daughter as a person, and the romance overall. I will not be reading the second in the series.

I found Tidelands was a good re-introduction into the world of reading - I've had a few year break due to contending with an anxiety disorder which meant I couldn't focus on reading. The characters were compelling, kept me turning the pages and wanting to keep with the story - it is a slow burner really. The ending was a bit sudden, a much faster pace, however there is another book in the series which explains why there felt to be an open end.

Beyond the immersive settings and the interesting perspective of life for a poor, rural community under King Charles I/the civil war that surrounded him (which is a subplot at best), this didn’t really compel me to read the rest of the series. It’s an incredibly slow read imo, whilst descriptive detail about witchcraft and medicinal remedies was interesting, I didn’t believe in Alinor and James nor do I think their pairing make much sense from the beginning! I have been a long term fan of Gregory’s other historical novels but this was not it for me!

Unrated

I have heard about this author for years and decided to give her a try. This was a struggle to finish, as I found all the characters flat and unlikable. I will leave as unrated but have no desire to ever read her again; just not my cup of tea.
