Didn't love this volume quite as much -- I think it's more of a "setting up things to come" kind of thing, but I also found myself a bit annoyed with Emma's and William's behavior; it was so unfair to Eleanor.

In this volume, we learn some history about William's parents, see some of the aftermath of his and Emma meeting at his engagement party, a series of letters between Emma and William, and we meet Eleanor's parents.

Ack, this is getting so good! Or it was good already, and I'm just getting more excited. Emma is changed after her trip to England, and the whole house seems to be involved one way or another. It sounds like there are a lot of Hans fans out there, and I don't get it. But I do love Dorothea and her husband. Dramatic! Heh heh! But as Mori puts it in the afterward, we're just waiting until the rich boy does something... and I want William to get on with it! I do like Emma coming out of her shell, though. And putting out fires.

By the by, the description of the book on GoodReads and Amazon is for the wrong volume. And it's a spoiler. Boo!

Emma has changed so much but in many ways a great way. I am worried for the future though and the changes that could come in due to it. It was full of social drama with at least one entitled snob. Emma is growing into herself. The drama is building, it is just waiting to go wrong.

“Emma” is a manga about a maid and an upper class gentleman who fall in love and have to fight the Victorian class system to be together. It is a traditional romance narrative, with warm characters and a rollercoaster plot line.
I decided to read this series because I wanted to take a break from hard reading, with some light graphic novels. I was drawn to this series because it is set in the Victorian era, which is one of my favourite historical settings.
“Emma” is a sweet story. The writing, however, I found was a little quirky. It seemed that the writing would suddenly stop, without revealing everything. For example, a character would be telling a joke, I’d flip the page, and the scene would be completely changed. This also happened when a character was retelling something, when a character was revealing something, and at random times throughout the dialogue and narrative. I found it disruptive and frustrating.
The other irksome part I found about “Emma” is in the number of books included in the series. The main narrative runs from book one to, and including, book seven. Books eight, nine, and ten are not part of the main narrative, but are instead made up of short stories about the other characters in the series. This is a sweet idea, but I do not like this to be included in the main series. It should have been added as additional material, or as a separate, sub-series.
The overall story was alright. I have too much to read that I probably will not read the short stories that are included in the series. “Emma” fulfilled its purpose of giving me a break from hard reading.

The synopsis for this volume makes it sound much more exciting than it is; nothing really happens but we get the setup for several things to happen in the future. Even the author writes in her afterword: "We're at the point where nothing's gonna happen until the rich boy does SOMETHING!". William's mother is explained a bit more and we get ANOTHER new character although it's not clear how he fits in with Emma and William's story just yet.

I really just don't like the idea that William has a fiancee, yet he is also pursuing Emma.

Do I understand it? Yes. But it doesn't mean I have to like it.

This isn't the way to go about it and it is going to only add more fuel to the fire.

And back to the middle school level of acceptability. You just have to feel for these poor star-crossed lovers. I am a little tired of being left hanging at the end of each book. I should have just ordered them all, as they are a quick read, so I don't have to feel too guilty...
