Is this book as good as the Vagrant? Absolutely not. But I still loved it.
I’m genuinely shocked by how underrated these books are. They’re honestly different from any other sci-fi/fantasy amalgamation I’ve ever read before. It’s kind of like reading an acid-trip video game.
Maybe the storytelling isn’t up everyone’s alley, but the sheer talent of the writer is undeniable.

Wow. I loved following Vesper go on her own unintended adventure. Newman's prose is easy to read, his descriptions of the landscape immerse you into the world. Vesper in my mind: Oops, I didn't mean to be the one to carry Gamma, but let me show you how much of a bad ass girl I am now that I've grown up a bit! Digging deeper into the Infernals was interesting and fun to finally see how spread out they really are. Vesper gets herself into some trouble, but it builds to a nice climax and really sets up book 3.

I fell for the Vagrant. His daughter grown up, I have zero interest in. Therefore it took me way over halfway for me to get into it. I wanted to stay with the Vagrant and Harm, learn their relationship and way of living, because I dig it. But no, let's go YA all of a sudden because Vesper was very typical ya heroine.

An interesting sequel. A world in continuous development, I really liked it. I can't wait to continue.

This was a slog, the writing was good but I don't know it just didn't compel me and I felt like I was continually pushing onwards to get to the good part and it didn't exactly appear. The ending fell a bit flat. It may have helped if I'd read book 1 first!

Although the prose is unique and beauifully put at times, I struggled as often with it, having to read passages over and over again before I caught the meaning.
Still, I liked the characters - the goat again stealing the show haha - and the worldbuilding.

Peter Newman's 2nd novel and 2nd book of The Vagrant trilogy is a pretty unique book. The author's vocabulary is really good and certainly better than in the first book (better as in Peter managed to convey images clearer than he did in the 1st book). Minor spoilers will follow.
Alas I had a few problems with the book. First of all, I find Vesper... boring. She is a plain normal girl that happens to wield *the* sword. The original plot hook feels too random and her relationship with Duet feels too awkward. While I really liked Samael and the premise around him, I hated "the kid".
Finally, my main problems with Newman's books are 2. First of all, major spoiler is coming for book 1 and 2, both the Userper and the Yearning were hyped throughout each book. I was eager to reach the pages in which I would see them in action. The Userper died basically from a heart attack and the Yearning from a simple stab.
Also, Newman's world seems too vague for me. Words like "Skyn" means nothing to me. Of course after reading I get that it is a fake skin that heals wounds but I do not know how or why does it work. Many things work "because they do" for example how the Infernals communicate with each other or how diseases are cured by the sword and more. I wanted more details, more explanations.
I will read the 3rd part hoping that it will get better though. I liked the 1st part of the trilogy. Hoping for a nice closure.
