A new thriller that I would continue reading. The thing that bothered me, and after finished reading I know it'll be back in book two, the politics!
Arghh, I'm so tired of it. It's reelection year for Jorge Gonzales and much of DC story is about his evil chief of staff, Peter whatever his last is, running the show. I tried skimming some of this. I know there's got to be some politics, but this was more than I enjoy. I want action!
There's action, but I wish there were more. Matt Drake was an Airborne Ranger and has been working for DIA in Syria. Without giving too much away, he was in Syria once and back again to rescue a captured CIA officer in unfriendly territory. While there he met a boy (this was my eye roll moment). But I very much enjoyed the second half of the book than the first. 3.5 stars

The received an advance copy through Goodreads so as a thanks, here's my review. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is extremely well written, the characters have a depth not usually seen in an authors debut and the twists keep you on your toes. Matt Drake is a complex hero and Bentley is able to humanize him and you can feel his anguish. I can't wait to see what the future holds for Matt Drake!
Wonderful debut book from author, Don Bentley. This isn’t my usual genre, but Don is a friend from college, and I was so glad to be able to read his first novel. I’m looking forward to the next installment of the Matt Drake books. If you are a fan of the military thrillers, then I think you’ll enjoy this one. :)
Notes:
Low end of 3 Stars
I got this book because I saw the latest book released for the series in the bookstore. The narrator is not great & very stiff. The writing doesn't grab me and I find the whole plot/characters to be rather flat. Not at all exciting.

DNF at 147 pages. This book is one giant cliche that will probably be loved by douchy bros and lovers of douchy bros. Page after page, it screams, "Written by an old, out-of-touch white man."

I enjoyed this book. Good character development of Peter, CIA director and the President. There are two stories that slowly merge throughout the book. The main character, Matt Drake is well developed and is sometimes humorous. which I like. His relationship with Frodo is excellent. Frodo becomes an important character at the end of the book. This is well written and I plan to read more of Mr. Bentley's books.
A gripping, no holds debut by Don Bentley sees Matt Drake fighting the odds and dodging the bullets in the streets. Matt Drake is a great character, and Bentley lets him shine alongside some other great characters that really give this book a refreshing twist. The character development is outstanding, and it's obvious why Bentley was chosen to help further Clancy's legacy.
I heard a lot of hype on social medial surrounding Don Bentley's debut novel Without Sanction. After finishing it I can honestly say it lives up to the hype and more! Don absolutely crushes this book. It has everything you can want in a thriller - interesting plot, mix of action and politics, great characters, etc. Also, it has great pace without sacrificing necessary setup and character development.
What I love the most about the book is that everything isn't perfect. The good guys - Matt Drake & Frodo - are brave, hard-nosed elite operators, but they are also damaged and flawed in their own ways. And the big mission to save the day keeps running into problems and seems in doubt until the end. It's easy to create characters and missions that go perfectly, so this is refreshing to see what happens when things go sideways with characters who are questioning their ability to finish the job. Really adds a lot to the book.
Matt Drake reminds me a bit of Nick Petrie's Peter Ash character. Both have issues they're dealing with but have a sense of duty to help others around them. To me, it's inspiring to see people fighting their demons yet still find a way to come out on top and triumph over evil.
Highly recommend picking up a copy of Without Sanction. Don Bentley is going to win a lot of awards for this book and I have a feeling we'll be seeing a lot more of Matt Drake. Get on board from the beginning and enjoy the ride!

**Won an ARC of this book in a giveaway. Thanks to Goodreads, the publisher, and the author for giving me the chance to step out of my comfort zone and try something new.**
What a ride?! This book is non-stop excitment. Lots of action, espionage, and feelings.
After his last mission in Syria Matt Drake is a broken man. His asset was killed and his best friend badly injured. Matt is haunted by what happened there and suffers from some PTSD and survivors guilt. When he gets the chance to go back to Syria to save a fellow comrade he sees it as a path to forgiveness. He can go back and somewhat right his wrongs from the previous mission. It won't be able to bring the people lost back but he may be able to bring a bit of himself back. Even though it is seen as a suicide mission it is something he has to do. Things aren't what they seem though and his mission goes awry almost immediately. Things continue to spiral out of control from there.
Matt is a great character. He is bad ass but also full of heart. I really enjoyed learning about him. This is a great start to what could be a fun series. The way this book ended even Matt knows his time in the DIA isn't finished. I look forward to seeing what is in store for Matt and Frodo in the future.
