This book tells the tale of the Animorphs being hunted by a Veleek: a swarm of deadly creatures from Saturn that consume energy, and whom Visser Three has reprogrammed to hunt morphing energy. Rachel goes for a fly before gymnastics camp and is attacked by a group of jays when she flies too close to their nest. She plummets to the ground, and the resulting head trauma leaves her with temporary amnesia. The Veleek senses her energy when she morphs back, and immediately starts pursuing her. Ax finds amnesiac Rachel running from the Veleek, and allows it to take him instead. Marco is also taken when he, Cassie and Jake attempt to toy with the Veleek.

Ax has the brilliant idea of morphing into a flea to escape his cage on the mothership, and winds up crawling around on Visser Three's back. He slowly half attempts to morph back into his Andalite form whilst on V3's back, the energy of which draws the Veleek and leaves V3 with a severed hand. As Ax and Marco escape the mothership, they learn that the Veleek is extremely susceptible to water, leading the Animorphs to lure the Veleek out into the ocean and destroy it.

---

This book differs from the previous seven in that each chapter, rather than book, is narrated by a different Animorph. It works exceptionally well in these circumstances, as we get to see each Animorph's point of view as they run from the Veleek. We get to see Rachel stumbling through the forest, unable to even remember her own name. We get to see Ax being held captive on the mothership, taunted by V3 and his army.

I loved learning about the Ellemist in the previous book, so getting wind (no pun intended) of another alien creature in this book was a bonus. The Veleek was also from our solar system, which was even cooler! I'm interested to see if the author introduces any other alien species.

Cool integration of multiple POVs for the first time. The story is a bit on the fluffy side, but the cutting back and forth in narrators is mostly successful. Nice change of pace.

Well its pretty "action packed." Which is fun. But it doesn't have the character insight that I usually enjoy. The different POVs are nice. As an adult, this book isn't super entertaining but I can see younger me really liking it. Marco driving was a treat though. Worth reading just for those scenes.
