This book made me change my mind about Scalzi. I couldn't finish Red Shirts but I really liked this one. It was made even better by Wil Wheaton's narration. It was so good I think I'll try his other novels.
This story has an interesting premise about how an alien species (basically intelligent blobs) hires a Hollwyood agent to try to improve their image before introducing themselves to humanity. So it's kind of silly and told in an even breezier tone that the usual Scalzi. The aliens are so conversant with modern lingo (thanks to television) that it doesn't remotely read as a serious exploration of first contact. But if you are looking for a fun, fast-paced, comic SF story, look no further.
Light hearted read. First half was better than the second half. Didn't really enjoy the second half but the premise was fun and interesting
John Scalzi is a god-given gift to us. He can write anything and it would be entertaining and fun. This book is nothing less. Its funny, bizarre and delightful from the first page and doesn't slow down till you are done with it. I finished it in one sitting with a smile on my face. Now considering this is his first book ever, it shows the inkling of a name he has become today.
I just can't get enough of his works. He is a magician that actually got me to branch out from fantasy into science fiction and I have managed to gobble down most of his works.

Not as complex as Old Man's War, but it was entertaining and I laughed.
I have read a few John Scalzi books and, generally, enjoyed them. I would usually categorise them as high concept sci-fi that was amusingly told but I wasn’t necessarily convinced with the whole package (endings?).
Then I got this book in a deal. I liked the sound of the premise. It was such a pleasant surprise. It was accessible, funny and well conceived from beginning to end.
Some of the philosophical sections about the meaning of life and definition of souls left me cold (or just exasperated) but a race of aliens who communicated with odours just offered too many opportunities for fart jokes to not be a delight. I laughed out loud numerous times. The jokes at the expense of Hollywood and the movie industry were great too.
Highly recommended.

Agent to the Stars is a cute book, that's the only way to describe it. Kind, professional, sarcastic Hollywood agent Tom Stein gets the ultimate job, introducing a race of blob-like aliens to the world, while at the same time dealing with every egomaniac, diva, and paparazzi in LA. The characterization is more charicaturization, but the plot pops and sizzles, and Scalzi is at his best taking wacky ideas and throwing them at the wall. And hey, it's a free ebook, so what do you have to lose?
There's no way I could have guessed the loops and twists this story took, but I certainly enjoyed the ride. Clever, with interesting characters and thoughtful discussions, and a decent amount of laughs along the way. What a fascinating way to posit the question of how to handle an alien introduction! Wil Wheaton was the perfect person to perform this piece, and he just did such a beautiful job. The characters were easy to distinguish, and I enjoyed his voice. Really great listen!
