I am really enjoying all of the Longmire books, and able to see them as different from the TV series, which I also really like.
Another great instalment of the Longmire series. I'm a fan of the Longmire tv series and knew I just had to read the books and I've yet to be disappointed. I'll admit this was not my favourite in the series, but they can't all be the best one. I really enjoy the parts with Virgil and hope that he'll appear again in a later book. Can't wait to start book 9 'As the Crow Flies'.
Found myself starting the excerpt on the next book after the ending, like binge watching Netflix.
A unique story in the series. Hit-or-miss for me, but more hit than miss I think. I like the focus on Walt and the confusing nature of Virgil, but I missed the other supporting characters.
Apart from few uncomfortable moments writing about women - this is becoming a theme - this is actually one of the better written in the series. Very well drawing new supporting characters. And a very touching ending for a pulp mystery novel.
I am not quite are why I didn't enjoy this book. Perhaps it is because this is the first Craig Johnson book I have read and Hell is Empty isn't a good place to start with the Walt Longmire series.
This book is rated so highly I wonder what I missed. I found the story to be very slow and repetitive. The story started out fine but as it kept going I disliked Walt more and more. How many times can you lose your hat (possibly an inside joke that I would have gotten with reading more of his stories), lose your friend only to keep finding him again at exactly the right moment, almost dying several times. Lather rinse repeat.
Maybe with more knowledge of Dante's Inferno I would have noticed the parallels.
I guess it comes down to not every book is for everybody. This book wasn't for me. It could be the right one for you. I don't think a book gets 4.20 stars by accident. I would say maybe stay away from this one until you have read a few of his other books.

Definitely not my favorite in the series. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I would have read Dante first. Too much time in Walt's head and not enough time with the rest of the characters. As always, though, well-written with great depictions of Wyoming.
