A quiet, philosophical and touching book about a person who has found their true calling: in the case of our protagonist it's his newly found love to tune pianos which becomes his calling, but many of the lessons could be applied to other professions. While I didn't really feel the romance part, I liked the protagonist (whom I read as a bit neurodivergent) and how the book managed to capture my interest in tuning pianos (I played the piano for eight years but I know very little about running). A sweet book for a rainy afternoon :)

When Tomura is at high school, he overhears a piano being tuned and immediately decides he wants to become a piano tuner. This quiet, undemanding book follows him through the early years of his career. He is plagued but self-doubt in his abilities, but clearly wants to do his best at his job and to help his clients get the most out of their instruments. It was satisfying to see Tomura eventually grow in confidence and I enjoyed both the metaphors connecting piano-tuning with life in general, and the forest imagery.

Jest to idealny przykład, żeby nie oceniać książki po okładce. Na bieżąco i z nieukrywanym entuzjazmem śledzę nowości wydawnicze oferowane przez Kwiaty Orientu. Kiedy zobaczyłam okładkę byłam mocno skonfundowana, jednym słowem nie spodobała mi się. W mojej głowie momentalnie pojawił się obraz o czym może być ta książka i wiedziałam, że to nie tematyka dla mnie. Oczywiście streszczenia nie przeczytałam, ponieważ byłam tak zniechęcona (czytaj uprzedzona), że stwierdziłam, że po tę pozycję sięgnę jak nie będę miała co czytać (a lista książek do przeczytania szybciej rośnie niż maleje). Nie wiem jaki impuls w końcu zadział, że zaczęłam czytać tą książkę, ale z każdą kolejną stroną nie mogłam ukryć zadziwiania jak bardzo moje przewidywania były nietrafne co do treści powieści. Jak dla mnie polska okładka mocno niedopasowana do tej lirycznej i muzycznej powieści. Zagraniczne wydania o wiele bardziej odzwierciedlają sam nastrój tej książki.
This was as pleasant, gentle novel with no plot but a refreshingly romantic take on music, pianos and piano tuning.
