Morgan Jerkins
Loved this book. She is an incredible writer and it was a great journey to read about her life and her experiences. She ends where she began with a very powerful last sentence.
This is a tough one to rate. On one hand, there are several moments in this collection that are important and taught me a lot. There were also points made that the author didn't really explain well, or she would make a strong statement that maybe warranted more explanation but then move on to another topic. I also don't know that she did enough wrestling/reckoning with some of the problematic shit that was said in here.
Many of the essays felt like reproductions of things I've read on the internet over the past few years and weren't as unique. I think where Morgan Jerkins shines is when she is talking specifically about her experiences, telling her stories as memoir. Overall, the subject matter was great but I thought the execution was lacking. A very worthwhile read nonetheless.

i really love Morgan Jerkins. everything she writes draws me all the way in. this collection of essays is honest, sincere, introspective, meaningful, and so thoughtful. Morgan is vulnerable and contemplative and curious.
i highly recommend this book as well as Wandering in Strange Lands and Caul Baby
Honest, unflinching, a collection which helped me shape my ideas around a difficult topic and further ideas - the power of the disabled black woman, for example, or how black women are not afforded the 'regenerative power' that others are
Just finished "this will be my undoing" by Morgan Jerkins. This book quite literally undid me. An excellent memoir essay collection. Not always easy to read, (it really shouldn't be) full of insight from a strong black, beautiful woman. Loved it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Unrelenting self-absorption prevents the author from understanding or accurately analysing every topic she speaks on.

A very personal memoir and treatise on race and gender in America. Some chapters are stronger than others but definitely worth the time. Jerkins blends the personal, theory and sociological observations into a cogent argument for intersectionality and how to survive it as a black woman.
Such a great read! Jerkins does a fantastic job providing accessible analyses of complex issues. I highly recommend listening to the audiobook, which is read by the author herself. Can't wait to read more of her work!
