What a delight it has been to re-read this book after so many years!

was just ok, if i did not write down the characters, i would have been confused right from the start, to much family drama, and conflict, and just plain just, would have been a better read with 300 pages less,

Nothing so comforting as a Pilcher novel.

the images of a calm but fulfilling life, how these rural/secluded spaces cultivate nice dependence/reliance/connections to your neighbors.
The funny role of the nanny/housekeeper vs estate owner...and who is dependent on whom.

I realize they are of another time but it is a bit sad how very second level the women are - dependent on the men for money, possibly admonished for spending too much, having choices taken on their behalf...

I very much enjoy Pilcher. She writes without haste and with a very good turn of phrase. Lots of detail and vibrant description of place. The best surprise I had was in an early chapter when a character from Shell Seekers turns up! And then later Pilcher has Violet Aird recall an encounter with this character's mother. Interconnectedness! What a wonderful surprise.

Just okay. Lots of description of the diverse weather. Setting is a small Scottish village. I found the lords and ladies and acquiring titles interesting. Lots of characters and several twists.

This book was so endearing and the description of the scenery and fall time weather was charming and enrapturing. I thoroughly enjoyed becoming well acquainted with each character and the interplay between them all.
