Love & Other Disasters by Anita Kelly had me invested in the characters and sitting with a book hangover when I finished. Thank goodness this is the first in a series and I have the advanced copy of the second book on my shelf (big hugs to Forever)!
OK, let’s talk about London and Dahlia. I love them. I love them individually, I love them together, I love their journey. They meet on a televised cooking competition and have instant chemistry, but don’t act on it at first. Each is working through something that’s occupying headspace. London has just shared their pronouns and identified as non-binary on television, and is processing their father’s less than receptive reaction. Dahlia is recently divorced and near bankruptcy, with the prize money for the show as her sole focus.
The way their personalities fit together was so special. The friendship, empathy, attraction, and acceptance was well written and multi-dimensional. The spice was on point and matched the character depth. I genuinely loved this book and their story so much. If you enjoy romance with depth, personal growth, humor, and spice – grab this book!

I really liked Dahlia and London, but I expected so much more from this book. It was way too long with very little happening. I was excited about the cooking show aspect, but that was lacking as well. It was a lot of telling with little showing, or else what was shown did not make sense with what we were told. For example, when midway through the book, we are told Lizzie is one of the top competitors as well as London. Up until then, Lizzie was hardly mentioned being in the top three or winning challenges ever, and Dahlia seemed to be outperforming London. It just didn’t make sense.
Also the sex scenes were not it for me. I’ve never cringed so hard from a book before. Those descriptors were just… not it. Also: trigger warning for big toe sucking. It’s like they were so good with communication but then they start sucking on her toe with zero warning. Took me out of it immediately. Feet are gross.
This is all so disappointing because London and Dahlia had the potential to be one of my favorite book couples ever.

A romance novel that takes place on the set of a cooking competition? And it’s queer?! Sign me up!
There was so much to love in this book from the characters being vibrant and fleshed out, the building up of the romance, the drama on set! Not to mention the really important discussions of non-binary representation, navigating your life after it throws you a curve ball, and finding the strength to stand on your own.
This book gave me the warm fuzzies and it’s not often that I get those warm fuzzies. Especially rare that I get them from a romance novel. Also the sex scenes were wonderful and the perfect blend of spice and sweetness. I can’t hype the fact that there was communication during those moments and how refreshing it was to see that.
