Much like its "twin book" Desperation, I really wanted to like Regulators more than I did. I did find it a bit better/more thrilling than Desperation, but this book also has faults.
It's certainly written more in Stephen King's Richard Bachman pseudonym style, a powerful thriller with a lot of over-the-top violence going on. While it was good to begin with and get things going, it soon gets old.
I was intrigued by the mystery of what exactly these things were that are attacking the neighborhood. Otherworldly beings? Action figures come to life? Some experiment gone wrong? The question of it kept me going, but the revelation comes probably half way, so the rest of the book is no longer about the mystery but how to beat it. Which would be fine, except for the continued gore-shock-fest and not much else.
Maybe I just didn't warm up to the Tak character who appears in both The Regulators and Desperation. Perhaps I'm just not giving him a fair shake. But I just can't place him anywhere near a list that includes Pennywise, The Man In Black, Barlowe and Annie Wilkes.
