This book left me feeling nothing. I closed it, promptly stuck it back on the shelf, and I think within a few days, it won't have left much of an impression.

I think part of it is that the translation is very clunky. Characters don't really talk like regular people, some of the exclamations are just... strangely worded.

There's a lot of telling in this book. The main character does this, then this, then this, but it's hard to really get a sense of any of the characters. None of them really seem like people. They just exist to further the story along.

I never got a sense of why the main character and his wife loved each other at all. In order to believe that his wife would become a suicide bomber without him ever realizing it, you first have to believe that there was something good in their marriage to begin with. But no one ever felt like an actual character.

Meh.

I wanted to like this book. I really, really wanted to--I thought the subject would be compelling. In the end, I was barely able to tolerate the writing. Either the translation was very poor, or the author is more concerned with being verbose than with being readable.

I found the antagonist's first person point of view annoying. His long-winded, overly intricate descriptions of intense moments weren't believable. Neither was his sudden knowledge of others' thoughts (momentary omniscience). Add to that the inability to consistently write in the present tense and it was just too much.

This book could have been amazing if it had be well written, but it wasn't. It just wasn't.

Enfin Free Palestine.
