I got this because of a thing REI was doing and also I needed a phone case so why not go for broke. Despite that, I’m really really glad I did. Gustafson is a rural Montana vet and he writes as someone who, despite desperately wanting you to take your dog to the vet when they’re injured, knows that may literally not be possible. (Because you’re out in the backcountry and the dog needs an immediate fix.)
He heavily supports a proactive approach to problems, with accustoming your dog to being handled and restrained from the get-go, so when you ARE out in the backcountry and the dog is in pain, they don’t take your ear off for pulling a burr out of their pads. His accounting of potential injuries is comprehensive, and treatments range from “bundle the dog and get to the vet” to “wait it out” to some elementary surgery (again, with the vet as the next stop). My only complaint is that he’s unfairly dismissive of topical and oral pesticides, but I’m also biased as someone whose dog went through heartworm treatment.
