A bit more complicated than HOB because of the family ties/clan politics being set up, and our main guy is a mischief maker from page one. I’m still interested in seeing where it goes!

I love Lan Wangji so much. He's so precious 🥺💜💜

Him saying

"Mine" to Wei Wuxian when he was drunk was so cute! I didn't think we'd get that so soon.

The fact that Wei Wuxian keeps joking around about liking men early in the volume and then later ends up with a man is just so much fun lol. He was so funny throughout most of the volume.

If you don't want a slow burn with a LOT of plot, this isn't the series for you! I love what's going on though. There's so much.

I only had a couple of issues with this first volume:
- Wei Wuxian drinks Emperor's Smile and says he never got to have it when he was younger but in the flashback, he did? Not a big deal, but it irked me a bit.
- Lan Wangji tells this long ass story explaining a lot about a specific incident. I would have much rather gotten that information spread out.

This translation is not especially good, but it doesn't totally destroy the tone. I would recommend seeking out a fan-translation if you want more faithful language. Personally, I think reading a couple chapters from the (now incomplete) ExR fan-translation and then swapping to the 7S translation for the rest is a good balance of accuracy and accessibility. I hope to see a better translation of this novel one day.

I read this book in four days cause my crush really wanted me to read this, and even though my crush is in vain I persevered, though this book made it so enjoyable. I haven’t read a book that fast since high school (Divergent of all things). This was very enjoyable, and while slow burn really gets to me because for the love of god y’all need to kiss already, I sqeed like a fan girl when the little tidbits of romance DID pop up. I’m still mixing up characters because so many people have the same surname, but I’m getting there.

If you're after a book about complex characters with a rich magic system and an interesting plot with LGBT rep then this is the book for you. It is so easy to lose yourself in the pages of this book that the time flies by without you realising. I think this is fast becoming a comfort read for me.

I've read a fan translation of this online before it was released in English so this is technically a re-read for me but it was so nice to get back into this world again. I understand why they have had to break the story up into separate books but when you reach the end you can tell that this is not where it was meant to be stopped.

I've already pre-ordered the next two books in the series and can't wait to read them again, for the time being, though I'll just rewatch The Untamed on Netflix.
