It was a really slow start and took like 70% of the book til we got any positive emotion out of the guy. They really packed on the trauma with Romeo. It felt a little random when all of a sudden he realized he loved her after ignoring her for days.

Sure there we some cute/spicy moments, but he felt a bit cruel at times.

What happens when loud, exuberant, slightly deranged southern Belle Dallas Townsend crashes in like a wrecking ball into grumpy, also slightly deranged billionaire with control issues Romeo Costa’s ordered little life and smashes it into smithereens? Chaos ensues, that’s what. Hey it’s not her fault Mr Romeo decided to steal her away from her sheltered little life.

This isn’t your typical grumpy alphahole - angelic sunshine romance. I mean it is, but it is also two beautiful, complicated, flawed people hurting each other and lusting after each other and falling in love in spite of themselves. Dallas is the spoiled, sheltered, sassy southern debutante with a passion for food and books. The very definition of a bratty society Princess. She has hidden depths and a spine of steel Romeo neither expects nor prepares for, and is unapologetically terrible at times, as he is to her. They both lash out before they figure their shit out. But I loved the little chaos queen, because she’s ultimately good, just a girl finding and owning her power on her terms in the stuffy patriarchy she was raised in.

Romeo is a puzzle wrapped in an enigma in a bag of hangups, living up to his alphahole title. Until he doesn’t. And when he doesn’t he’s the ultimate book boyfriend with his protective instincts and caretaking abilities and his stupidly extravagant acts of service. He’s basically Tony Stark before he grew a conscience so don’t come at me clutching pearls about his character. He may have daddy issues but he’s also daddy af, with his disciplinarian streak and airtight control. And of course the sexy Duke like way of talking. He has several demons and the vulnerable boy underneath the man makes you ache for him. Watching him unravel for his Shortbread and slowly give in to her every single whim, even when she repeatedly fucks up, is sheer poetry. Their connection is as steamy as it’s reluctant, and the BANTER is absolutely god tier. The almost psychotic jealousy, the feral possessiveness, even the slight miscommunication? Romeo’s liberal and perfect use of “my wife”? It was like a shot of the elixir of life into my old lady veins. I love them milord.

As much as I am swooning over this slightly dark and definitely fucked up romance, let me tell you a secret, the Bromance between Romeo and his besties is probably my favorite thing about this book. Or at least one of them. The authors’ humor comes through everywhere, but the text messages between these men alone had me rolling in laughter. Looks like Oliver and Zach might (?) be getting their own books, and I am frothing for them, especially Zach who I am already halfway in love with.

Ms Huntington and Ms Shen writing a book together was the gift we didn’t even know we needed but I’m so thankful we are getting. And what a dynamite team they make. If you’re looking for salt of the earth blue collar folks falling in love, this world is not for you; this is pure escapist fantasy. The authors have created a decadent world of obscene wealth and excess, with fancy, jaded, filthy rich people, flaunting their mega mansions, and piles of designer brands. Straight out of a modern fairytale…or tragedy. There are fun little shoutouts to Beauty and the Beast and Romeo and Juliet, and a bit of The Duke and I vibe. They managed to totally redeem a specific trope I was prepared to loathe and I can only stand and applaud. I for one, am indecently in love with this book, and this world, and excited to see more of it.

TW: detailed link provided at the start of the book but some key ones to note - child abuse (past), parental neglect, mentions of pregnancy, infertility (past), cheating (not between main couple), MMC works in arms dealing

My reading experience was a strange one with this book. I started off thinking it was pretty stupid. The writing wasn’t bad, but a lot of the phraseology was just awkward. Yet, I kept reading. It didn’t really occur to me to DNF. As I kept reading, I weirdly fell in love with the characters. I laughed a lot. Somewhere along the way, it went from being kinda stupid to being a story I was really invested in and needed to know more. It’s not gonna be for everyone, but I eventually really enjoyed reading this.

My Dark Romeo is the first standalone in the Dark Prince Road series. Romeo Costa attends a party in Chapel Falls, Georgia to find a wife. He’s set his sights on Dallas Townsend, the fiancée of his industry rival Madison Licht. He then proceeds to be caught with Dallas in a compromising position, and insists she break her engagement to Madison and marry him instead. Her father reluctantly agrees. Dallas Townsend and her friends and sister are attending this debutante ball because it’s a tradition in Chapel Falls. She’s more interested in the food however. When she learns there’s British shortbread at a particular table she goes over to it where she ends up meeting Romeo and his two friends, Zach & Oliver. She’s less than pleased that Romeo insists on them getting married, but doesn’t have much choice after her father agrees. Romeo takes her home to get her things and then to Potomac where he lives. They eventually get married. He has another reason to marry Dallas than just hitting back at his industry rival, his father, Romeo Costa Sr., has made a condition of him being named CEO that he get married. Romeo has plans beyond that for Costa Industries, that we slowly learn about. On Dallas’s part her biggest want in life is to be a mother, but Romeo has no intention of giving in to her on that score.

This is one of my least liked billonaire romances that I’ve read. I found the characters to actually be TOO aggressively mean to each other for a longer period than I liked. Romeo is the typical cold calculating male protagonist, and Dallas tries to give as good as she gets, which makes her a eye rolling inducing character for me. Her single-mindedness about getting pregnant took the fun, sexiness and romance out of the story. She was using Romeo as a sperm bank, not a potential life partner, for much of the book. Romeo was also too aloof, for too long in the novel. They didn’t spend nearly enough time with each other. It’s really not until after the 60% mark you get glimpses of a potential romance, and after the 80% mark that they start opening up to each other.

Once they start opening up to each other you learn about each other’s traumas, which were both pretty horrific. They suddenly realize they love each other after some things happen with the secondary plot, however it’s hard to believe. It’s hard to believe in their love, because in my opinion it happens way too late in the story.

The biggest thing I liked in this book was all the food mentions and ironically Romeo’s friendship with Zach and Oliver.

I usually love enemies to lovers romances & billonaire romances but this was unfortunately a big fail for me. I have a book from Parker on my TBR that I’m excited to get to, but I won’t be continuing the Dark Prince Road series.

*I might also be someone who prefers fantasy ‘Beauty and the Beast’ retellings than contemporary ones because ‘Stolen Heir’ a book in the Brutal Birthright series by Sophie Lark is my least liked book in that series.*

This. Book. Blew. My. Mind!

First off, way to keep such a massive secret under wraps. Two, did you know this was going to be a series? I cannot wait for the next book because I loved this one so much!

🖤Beauty and The Beast Retelling
🖤Romeo & Juliet Vibes
🖤Arranged Marriage
🖤Forced Proximity
🖤Enemies to Lovers
🖤TRAUMA
🖤Spice
🖤All The Laughs

Let me tell you how Romeo and Dallas stole my heart. Dallas is crazy. She’s a wild card and gives no f*cks and she is everything that will make Romeo lose his mind. He’s buttoned up, cold, perfection to her messy, beautiful chaos. Never have two more opposites attracted. They had me laughing so hard!

The tension in this book had me on the edge of my seat. I highlighted at least half of the book. Whole pages, I kid you not. These queens did epic. Everything I could have wanted and more. So many tropes,
So many nods to retellings, so much spice. It was absolute perfection and you need to grab your copy immediately.

Available on KU or there are two beautiful covers to choose from
