A slow moving story of two sisters, moving between their childhood and adulthood. I fell more in love with it throughout as the characters and their relationship to each other develop. Mental health is a large theme so be prepared for heavy pages.

This is a book of sorrow, laughter, and love, about two sisters growing up in France. There are two narratives, alternating between present day and the past, as they grow up. The author is a best seller in France and this book is her literary debut in the United States. The translation was excellent, but
the alternating narratives were a little hard to follow.
WARNING: There are scenes of child abuse, with a single alcoholic mother beating her two daughters with a belt buckle.
Characters in the book:
Emma, older sister, who tries to protect Agathe
Agathe, 5 years younger than Emma and
Mima and Papi, grandparents
Mother of Emma and Agathe, divorced
One quote, conversation between Emma and Agathe, about their uncle: 'One can't think about nothing. Well, except for our uncle. He's lacking the essential equipment. "
"Absolutely. His brain has been reported missing."
I rate this book 3.5 stars rounded up.
Thanks to Kathy Weiss at Europa Editions for sending me this eARC through Edelweiss.
