Way too gruesome and dark for me. I like to feel good when I read books and this was so dark it made me feel heartsick and stressed. I skipped parts and couldn’t finish it. Horrible details of torture. Yuck!

"The Mermaids Singing" is very well written. The story is compelling, the characters complex. I had to skip the descriptions of torture; and frankly, I don't understand why fiction writers have to describe these things in gruesome detail. I will read other Val McDermid books. I hope her later books rely less on graphic accounts of human inhumanity.

God, the writing in this book was awful. Basically a bunch of clichés fighting each other to find out who would win.

Quite a dark and disturbing horror/thriller. Sometimes the characters come to miraculous conclusions for no apparent reason which is the reason it didn't get 5 stars. Was written very well. I've had a bad experience with Val McDeirmid so I wasn't expecting such a good read. Think I will have to continue with this series!
