Spoilers!

I think this is one of the Discworlds where Pratchett really goes all in to make a point, and I love it.

  • I agree with Pratchett that this isn't a super dark book, as it were, but it definitely deals with some grimmer subject matter than the others do, or at least, it deals with grimmer subject matter in a more obvious way. But I think Vimes is well suited to that - he's a bit of a noir detective and while this left less room for jokes, that wasn't what this one was about. And I appreciated that
  • Nobody says fuck the police louder than Samuel Vimes
  • I love that Pratchett's most iconic characters (Granny Weatherwax, Sam Vimes) are so iconic not because they're perfect characters, but because we see how MUCH they struggle to do the right thing. But what makes them so good is that at the end of the day they don't let the beast win - they're always watching over their own shoulders, because they know their own power and don't want to let it run amok. I think this series does something beautiful by illustrating just how HARD it is sometimes to be a good person, to consistently make choices that are good for not just you but the world around you.
  • This series is purely hopepunk. These characters are gritting their teeth and angry and they are doing the right thing because by Christ they are going to leave the world a better place than they found it and they KNOW everyone else is capable of doing the same.
  • I love young Vimes. Reminded me a lot of Carrot.
  • MORE OF YOUNG VETINARI, PLEASE. I wish I could go to the Assassin's School. Side note: more of Vetinari's aunt too!!
  • I also wish we got some more Sybil, as she was an awesome character

Idk, man. These books just mean so much to me.

Heroic, pragmatic, competent yet humanly flawed... It's rare to see a character like this. Cheers to Samuel Vines, and Terry Pratchett for writing a time travel story that, against all odds, feels wonderfully sensible. With that odd touch of fantastic, of course.
