A private plane crashes in Antarctica, the rescue team disappears and an underground chamber is discovered. Another rescue team and scientists try to track down the missing people and the chamber but find no evidence except for some ancient cave drawings and writings that indicate an unknown civilisation and terrible danger. It was an exciting and quick read and very similar to Matthew Reilly's books.

In the so bad, it's good category. Potboiler in every sense of the word.

Edit: I was contacted by the author (or by a bot) after reviewing this book. He did the same thing when I reviewed the book on my own website a few years back. Bad move, Just leave people alone. Some people are going to like your stuff, others aren't. Just accept it.

I liked some parts of this book, others, not so much. In a nutshell, a team goes under the ice to look for another team that went before them and also maybe find out a source of petroleum. But there is an ancient presence under the ice that wakes up because of the humans and now it's out to get them. Add a Russian crazed killer out to settle a score with the soldier leading the second team, our titular character Alex Hunter who has special powers because of a previous accident.

Let's get the bad things out of the way first. There might be spoilers, but this is no game of thrones, you will live. Alex finds a comforting influence of Aimee, a researcher. And he mentions it at every fucking opportunity in the novel. Ok, dude, we get it. The babe makes you calmer. Then, super heightened sense and physical abilities of the hero, umm, what. The "extraordinary senses" are mentioned many times, but they kinda sound hooky. Just weird.

The ancient cities or civilizations under the ice were depicted nicely, but there was not a sense of dread that I got from reading say, Temple or Subterranean. It was more like, okay, here is the city where some weird shit happened. Take it and go.

Good things, I really liked the ancient presence. The monster and the way it hunted the team. The author did throw in the word Eldritch and Lovecraft on the same page, so haha. Yeah, nice. The Russian killer was a nice touch, but I was hoping he'd get more page time. Really evil, but not present much on the page.

It's not the kind of book that you can throw away after reading a few pages, but not the kind of book that you'd go out of your way to pick.

Are there more Alex Hunter books? I might give a shot to another one.

But I'd rather read about Scarecrow by Matthew Reilly.

I thought that the idea was quite good and the book had good aspects, but then it felt as if the story was not thought through. The writing style was somewhat choppy and the switching of locations happened without any indication.
Nevertheless, I liked the characters and I would be interested in seeing how the characters continue and if (I haven't checked yet) some of them reappear in later books.

Great book, I really enjoyed it. I love these types of adventures, and anything that involves underground Antarctic caves you know I'm going to love.

Enjoyable. Been trying to find books similar to Matthew Reilly / Jeremy Robinson / Andy McDermott. This was CLOSE. It had the action I was looking for, but not non-stop. Action with some slow stuff in between that halted action for a bit, especially when they'd switch points of view to someone not even there. Tied in with the story, but was boring. Have high hopes for the rest of the series, we'll see. I did like the MC ~ Alex.
