Well written but nothing fantastic- though I was pleasantly surprised by the ending!
I am PISSED OFF!!!! Spoiler Alert:
I feel like I just watched the damn season finale of Dallas when Bobby emerges from the shower....PSYCH! Not impressed with this ending or how I feel cheated by this author. And I love this author! Other than that...not liking the ending...I liked this book. I especially love the way this author writes and how I find myself losing time in her book. Having said that I didn't like the ending...doesn't mean I think it could have ended any differently, way too much co-dependence...I just didn't like the rug pulled out from under me. However, I loved Pandora and Edison. I don't have an older sibling, but I imagine the way this was portrayed is pretty spot on. I know this review is all over the place....but honestly, that's how I feel after finishing this last night. Not sure I recommend...maybe "enter at your own risk"

The read was ok, but the trick ending ruined even feeling ok about the book. I rarely rate books a "1," but I wouldn't recommend this at all.
The theme of the book itself was interesting, if only because not a lot of authors would think about tackling the topic of morbid obesity and the effect it has on close ones. I unfortunately however, thought the story was a bit bland, the characters extremely unlikeable and the ending, disappointing.
If Lionel Shriver wrote a novel about getting punched in the face, I’d feel half-compelled to let someone take a swing at me just to appreciate it more.

I have so much to say about this book. I think it needs to be a book-club selection/discussion.
I'm not a particular fan of this author; there is something about the writing style that doesn't work for me, but I haven't been able to put my finger on what it is (or isn't).
However, there were passages within this novel which spoke to me. There were also passages from the novel which have already been spoken *to* me, so was a little eerie. Some parts just hit home.
I may have to re-read it, with a highlighter in hand.

"What is wonderful about kinship is also what is horrible about it: there is no line in the sand, no natural limit to what these people can reasonably expect of you."
Private notes for my thoughts.

This is my second Shriver novel (after We Need to Talk About Kevin) and I'm hooked. These are works of fiction that explore current issues without becoming too dry. I love an author who challenges me (and one who leaves me grateful for the Kindle's ability to look up definitions on the go!), who gives me moments of smiling - if not downright laughing - out loud, along some sudden insight or way of thinking about something I hadn't considered before, and manages to write well rounded (no pun intended) characters that you may sometimes love, may sometimes hate, but almost always can - by the end at least - understand them.
(No spoilers here) I can imagine plenty of people hated the ending of this novel, and I can't say I was thrilled with where it went, but once I got past the initial response, it made enough sense that I didn't feel cheated.
