I last read this in the '80's, and enjoyed (and understood) it much more this time around.
But really, not even cutting edge publisher Dalkey Archive can get us a new translation? Kerrigan's was done in 1964. Time for a new one, I suspect.
Not sure what I love more, the post-modern set up at the beginning and end of the book (letters, notes, ect etc). Or the immediate undercutting of the truth told here by the narrator - by everyone involved.
Until his very last act, I did not see him as so much mindlessly violent, as a man with a bad temper put into bad situations. He talks about how bad he was in his youth, but never gives us examples - other than shooting his prized hunting dog for no good reason.
Looking forward to reading more. 9 of his works have been translated into English, I have a few on order now.
Short, and to the point.
