Pleasant cosy mystery/drama of a Chinese (?) palace maid in the women's quarters, who was an apothecary before human traffickers kidnapped her and sold her to the palace, whose medicinal skills get noticed when she identifies why the two favourite concubines' babies are sick. MaoMao (a strong, self-assured character, no-nonsense and neither perky nor angsty) soon finds her skills tested by a court functionary who wants to figure out how deep her knowledge goes, and how her expertise can be used to solve other little mysteries in the women's quarters, where competition for position and favour can get vicious. There is some humor sprinkled in about the way this popular functionary tries to use his handsomeness to win her over to his plans by flirting, but she is completely uninterested in anything other than her apothecary experiments, and her disdainful stonewalling spurs him to smoulder harder (to her even greater disdain).
This seems like a comfortable mild mystery read for audiences who enjoy a period setting. I don't see an overarching plot-arc yet, so I can't tell whether this will stay episodic or have a clear focus going forward. I don't mind picking up the next volume to see how it progresses.
