A Must Read

In a time of political polarization and fraction we need to understand the underlying motivation. Our form of government is to be of the people and for the people. We have allowed it to become advantageous only to the rich and powerful. This book explains what to be aware of to preserve our democracy which is every U.S. Citizen 's responsibility. We can improve our country's standing in the world and present a democratic model as we should.

“History doesn’t repeat itself, it rhymes.”

If you still aren’t convinced that Trump is leading us down a dangerous path, I’d recommend giving this a read. How Democracies Die explores a handful of countries and the events and actions that eroded their democracies, ultimately leading to their downfall. Obviously we saw the warning signs back when Trump was first elected in 2016 and this book was released in 2018, but we’re really seeing some of these things unfold in real time. It seems like there’s still time to change our fate, but still scary shit.

At times this was a little hard for me to get through I think just bc it was a lot of information, but overall great read.

For those who have picked up this book because of a concern for the state of American Democracy, the first six chapters will be difficult, as they focus on historical and contemporaneous examples of democracies foundering onto the shoals of autocracy and dictatorship. It isn’t until chapter seven that the America-specific information starts and as the book is nine chapters long, this can be a bit frustrating. I would also have very much appreciated a new, updated version as this was published in 2018, and it shows. It still has some very useful information and perspective; it hasn’t aged poorly, but it has aged.

So eerie to read right now. It’s like this book is a play book for the second trump administration.
