I enjoyed this book. It had Butcher's trademark dialog and I enjoyed the POV from the cat (Rowl). There were really strong female characters and the world building was interesting. I enjoy steampunk.

Story-focused adventure in a unique, interestly built, steampunk fantasy world. Well paced. However, much of the tension arises from threats to the safety of the main characters, who occasionally feel like they have pretty thick plot armor.

Don't let it's massive size intimidate you. The Master of Storytelling Jim Butcher will do you no wrong. He delivers epic action, rich world, and memorable characters that will keep you flipping through pages.

5 Stars !

Oh, and if you ever questioned, "Why goggles?" Jim knows...

I wasn't expecting much because everything I've read by Jim Butcher has been 2 or 3 star, but I really really liked this book. I remember there were airships and talking cats. Good stuff.

Excellent book. About 80% as much character as Dresden Files, but the bar is so high that it’s still easily one of the best books I’ve read all year. The gotcha I was afraid of (and which Butcher avoided, for the most part), was making it feel like Dresden Files just with a steampunk theme. In fact, the only thing similar to Dresden Files was the story arc, which I think of as a bit of a Butcher fingerprint. Each book neatly wraps itself off, leaving a few trailing ends for the next book to catch on to, but not leaving the reader annoyed they can’t get a hold of the next book quite yet. Perhaps not the best strategy for selling books, but the quality of the story and editing makes up for that in spades - I will happily read every Butcher book I can get my hands on when I get the chance.
