I loved this story. If you enjoy second-chance romances, breaking generational cycles of trauma, and healing this is a great book. I  recommend checking the trigger warnings.

WHITNEY WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!!! THIS FUCKED ME UP!!!!!! I kid you not I got WAR flashbacks to the first time I watched La La Land!!!!!!!! I was SOBBING at the end oh my GODDDD!!!!!!!!!

This book was the POC combination of all my favorite tropes: multigenerational ethnic family drama featuring the right person at the right time. oh my god I will be haunted by this book forever.

Like, where do I begin?! Every character is just so COMPLICATED in their own ways, and the prose was just beautiful and so deep and I am just emotionally ripped apart by this book. Luckily, I was stitched together by the end, but it was SUCH a hard journey. I’m so glad that somebody convinced Tia Williams to write an epilogue because if she left it the way she did, I would riot- I could not be left in that emotional state that I was in when I finished the book. Eva and her whole lineage of women is just so beautiful and complex that I feel like this was one of those love stories that’s more than the advertised love story and it was just perfect. I feel like it was not even about the romance; it was about everything else, which was so perfect. Audre is so astute for her age. I thought she was 16 this entire time but she’s 12?! No way. And Shane is more than brooding, Male writer; the chapter with Ty was actually devastating and I will think about the way the chapter ended forever. I knew I had to finish the book in one sitting after that paragraph because I was like I cannot leave this book in the state like I need to know to tie in the reveal is just so heartbreaking. 

I love that one of Tia Williams’s comps is one day because that’s so perfect. I need to be ripped apart emotionally again in the way this book hurt me.

I had complicated feelings about this book. I thought Tia Williams did an incredible job portraying pain and what it’s like to live with a disability, addiction, recovery, depression, self harm, and the toll of poverty on a person. I enjoyed seeing Eva and Shane’s growth throughout the story and their deep connection felt palpable. However, the side characters were all so extreme in their personalities that they seemed more like caricatures of people rather than supporting characters with substance. Additionally, the languages and pop culture references really date the story and things like the use of social media (twitter, instagram, etc) seem exaggerated. Every time it was mentioned it took me out of the story. I wish we got more of a conclusive ending and saw more of Shane and Eva as an adult couple. The ending left me dissatisfied and wanting more.

After years of hearing about this book, I imagined it to be a slow, sad, brooding romance. It is definitely some of those things (check the content warnings!), but the tone is also light and readable, which came as a surprise. I honestly felt like it maybe could have gone deeper and taken a bit more time? Like the content was definitely heavy, but the way it was addressed wasn't super lived-in. I really really liked the ending and the overall themes of self-discovery and not having to be perfect to be loved.

I don't know that there's any one thing that makes a book "good", but I do know that I didn't enjoy myself while reading this, and I have no idea why its readers are so insistent about others knowing this story. Shane and Eva's love scared me in maybe a really good way, but coupled with all the pain and trauma it grew in? This was tough. Emotionally I was exhausted on page 65, but I didn't know the content warnings beforehand so that could be part of it.  There are a lot of good parts of this book (Audre's entire character, Eva's honesty with herself about her relationship with her mother) that give me glimpses of why it's so popular, but I just won't condone the abundance of triggering content for the sake of the narrative. The arc of Ty's character was not okay. So let's just say that with the dark twists and romanticizing of self harm, it was a long seven days reading this. 

The syntax was gorgeous, though. I felt everything.

Seven Days In June is about two writers. They had an intense week-long relationship in their teens, and have been using each other as muses for their writing ever since. 

I absolutely loved this book. I thought it was written beautifully and I truly felt the intensity of their relationship. I really liked how the story was revealed one a day at a time, flicking between past and present.

It also raised some interesting topics such as disability, generational trauma, positive co-parenting, and online fan culture. 

The only reason that this wasn't a 5* for me was just because I felt the ending was a little rushed. Minor spoilers:

I wish we had a bigger reconciliation for Eva and Shane than just the epilogue. It felt a bit too fast. 

I'd really recommend this one, but maybe check out content warnings first.

Absolutely love this author. The timeline and narrator jumping never felt confusing at ALL. It just made the story more vibrant and detailed.
