DNF @ 36%. I honestly am just getting a lot of cognitive dissonance from this book? It literally has a “The State of the Black Author” panel in the book that condemns blaxploitation in media, and how there needs to be more black joy and showing black people as literally just any other person instead of deeply and always traumatized. And then it seems (to me, who is a white person) to do exactly the opposite and be the paragon of blaxploitation.  Maybe I’m missing something since this book isn’t written for me specifically and I don’t have the cultural context for it. I don’t know. But it seems very dissonant in what it’s saying and doing. It feels icky. I may be misinterpreting the author— I certainly haven’t stumbled on any black reviewers saying the same thing, so I may be totally getting it wrong. But it feels icky for me, so I’m just going to leave it. 

I honestly don’t even have thoughts on the romance or even the plot because that has overshadowed everything else for me.  I feel weird about it and I’m just not going to continue. 

Finally, this is a little more a nitpick than criticism on the book, but some content warnings would be good to put in this one. There’s a lot of extremely dangerous self-harming situations. I didn’t know this going in, and recently have been having pretty bad mental health issues requiring partial hospitalization. Luckily It didn’t throw my mood or thoughts in a bad direction, but it could have. A little warning ahead of time would have been nice.

I don't like how the child is almost like the singular plot device for the entire emotional story. let audre lead the way. The narrative voice sounds like a fashion magazine editor trying to convince you they are in fact deep. I really wanted to like this.

Absolutely love this author. The timeline and narrator jumping never felt confusing at ALL. It just made the story more vibrant and detailed.

It was trying to be too many things and unfortunately I couldn’t really even understand what it was aiming for. I was more intrigued by my TBR list than finishing this book that I had no connection with.

I have so many words for how much I loved this book. It has taken me awhile to spring some words together because my thoughts were all over the place. This is my first Tia Williams book and my God, this woman has such a way with words. Her pen is breathingly beautiful and she has made a fan out of me.

You have Eva Mercy who has terrible migraines and a pen vicious enough to write a 15 book series while having amazing powerhouse of a daughter, Audre. When she rekindles with her high-school love, Shane, we are taken back to their past and what made them who they are today. This story is so heartbreaking and the relationship dynamics that were put into these characters make them so relatable. It feels very real and gives a realistic view of how children are treated because of parental neglect while putting their personal agendas at the forefront rather than taking care of their children. Every adult in their past that was involved actually deserves jail time.  It sheds light to sometimes, rekindling relationships can come just as much as they can go. 

There was so much care and thought being done throughout this book and I appreciated it more than anything. Seeing how Shane is battling his addiction while trying to avenge his past and Eva coping with her chronic illness. You see the depiction of how debilitating it is to constantly show up for yourself everyday while trying to heal from your past and the present. It also shows how love can help you realize that you are worthy of being alive and being loved. Eva and Shane are meant to be and I will stand on that.

I really enjoyed this, for the most part. I loved the exploration of complex characters in a somewhat toxic relationship and how their trauma played into it. I also loved the representation of Eva with chronic migraines, as someone with chronic migraines myself I liked that. 

However, and this isn’t the authors’ fault, the cover makes this seem more like literacy fiction, and this is more like of a contemporary, comedy…romance (it wasn’t really romantic but it also wasn’t NOT romantic). Due to how many heavy themes this had, I think it might have worked better as lit fic, but the comedy did help the digestability I think. 

I’m excited to read more from this author!
