Whew, the first 2/3 of this book was sooo dry and frustrating; I cannot imagine how frustrating it must have been to actually be investigating the case. The last bit picked up and was satisfying even though I knew the outcome. I enjoyed this book because I grew up about 10 miles from where the crime was committed.
dark mysterious medium-paced

Interesting story, poorly written and confusing at times keeping all of the people straight.

3.5
Knowing the areas discussed in this book helped me connect to it. The first half however is very drawn out - I think if I'd went into this blind I'd have been more interested but I knew the basics of the case ahead of time.

Fascinating. Not a well written book. But I was very interested because this is a true story of a murder in my district which took 18 years to solve.
dark informative mysterious medium-paced

Just like ever other true crime book, I have a problem with the repetition of the same information over and over. But if you like murderous backwoods brothers from Michigan, give it a try.

This was not the most well-written book I have ever read. I found numerous typos and errors throughout. That being said, it was an interesting true murder-mystery story that kept me going through until the end. Probably best reserved for real true-crime lovers as the narration gets very into the weeds of the investigative process.

This book is...creepy. A murder goes unsolved for 18 years because of a town's fear of a family. Where did the missing hunters go? Where are their bodies? Why is no one telling?
The worst part? I regularly drive by the bar mentioned. I drive past Mapes Road, too. On top of that, I heard that the men may be released from prison because most of the case was circumstantial! Eeek!
This one hit a little close to home. Literally.
