a good book.

It is early in the morning and DI Helen Grace is riding through the country roads when she is nearly knocked off her bike by a speeding car. She discovered a woman dying from gunshot wounds and this sets in motion the hunt for a murder. Later that morning a man is shot in his pharmacy and the hunt narrow down to a known petty criminal but when he is found dead Grace knows she has a spree killer on her hands.

I am a great fan of Arlidge's DI Helen Grace series and this latest episode doesn't disappoint. Here there is less about Grace and not much about the backstory as the plot is set over the course of a single day and is both frenetic and beautifully developed. Grace's relationship with her team is explored and the way that mental illness can send an individual over the top is handled delicately. Whilst the plot is sensational, it doesn't feel like that. Whilst this is a police procedural, it is of the highest calibre.

The last two books have really let me down to be honest... but this book is the best yet. So so happy about that.... This author just keeps gutting me🙄 but that's why I like reading this series.

Another fast-paced and intriguing story. I haven’t been blown away, but at the same time I couldn’t put it down.

This is not my favorite book of this series, I thought it was a bit flat. For me, the story felt a big long-winded, just for the sake of a 'better ending' of the book. Since the whole book happens in one day and a lot happens in that day, it felt rushed and not comfortable. Putting all that aside, I still was invested and wanted to know what would happen and the reason of all the killing.
The dialogue between Helen and the killer fell out of the blue and was really unrealistic, which disappointed me as Helen could have said much better things to convince the killer. And the death of one of the officers also fell out of the blue and felt like it was only necessary to "clear the air" between them and Helen.

I wasn’t completely overwhelmed with this book, but at the same time, still found it interesting and compelling to read, I finished it in a day.
The story is all told in about a day, following (seemingly) random killings in Southampton. The pace of the book, and how it was written made it feel very true to life and I think that’s what gave me momentum to keep going with the book. I’m interested to read the others in this series to see the similarities/differences.
