I liked this book more than I thought I would! The characters were well developed, and just when you think you've figured out what's going on, in comes a twist!

The first book of Lisa Gardner's shows a lot of potential for the great works she has since put forward. This, however, is not one of them. Unrealistic characters and situations, and (except for Quincy) no real likable protagonists. There's a spark there, but it doesn't take off in this novel.

Pretty well written, somewhat predictable, but enough surprises to keep it interesting. Read very much like a Tami Hoag novel (think Lucky's Lady, etc).

Fantastic give me ten more of them!! Theresa unknowingly married a serial killer and after he tries to kill her, is jailed in a maximum security prison leaving her to go on the run with her 4 year old Samatha. J.T is an ex military and ex mercenary who Theresa seeks out when her husband breaks out of prison by killing two armed guards. She hires him to teach her to defend herself when her ex Jim comes for her. Between the touch her and die vibes, Theresa being a badass, and the twisty turny plot, this was an absolute banger for all 400ish pages. My literal only complaint is that I needed more like lead up to their romance/attraction. It felt kinda sudden and it was a little bit of a letdown but otherwise no notes!

I've read some of Gardner's later books and thank goodness she's improved from this one. The characters were unlikeable and unbelievable. A woman who's been brutally abused by her husband for years seeks out a crass mercenary to train her and then has an affair with him? Doubtful. A man on the top ten most wanted list disguises himself as a cop and attends a briefing about how to catch him without being caught? Give me a break. The cherry on this rotten cake was the predictable ending.

Good. More character than story and no mystery. I pretty much knew how it was going to go right from the start. But that said,  the writing was good. I felt like I knew the characters and was therefore invested in the outcome.

Such a good story ruined by a completely unnecessary and poorly constructed “romance” between the two main characters
