The book was such a journey, depressing but one worth taking! Like a first person stream of consciousness, full of sensory descriptions of sound and smell, combined with a sadness and regret that you can’t wash away. The protagonist is an old man who dies and recalls his unlucky life of those near him dying prematurely. But some very elegant and efficient passages in the second half of the book, each at the moment of euologizing another fallen character. Short and engrossing!

This book was just not the right book for me at this time. It's a meandering stream of consciousness by a ghost who reflects on his incredibly sad life, up until he becomes homeless and completes suicide. Interspersed are snippets of his observances of the Tokyo homeless camp, public park, and train station where he lived late in life.

There are some beautiful reflections on how we can become unhoused and just how easy it is for that to happen. This is really about a man who was a ghost even when he was alive and about the myriad ways capitalism cruelly robs is of choice and humanity.

i wish i could rate this higher but i simply…did not enjoy it

it’s a 200 page book that took me around 2 months to finish. and i could feel so much if the symbolism going over my head but the subject matter is too dark for me to ever want to read this again. but it was still very interesting! i enjoyed the pacing/introspective narrative in class issues in japan :-) good just not for me
