I read this book from Bolivia as part of my Read Around the World Challenge. Unfortunate timing wise in reading, since just before this I read Homegoing by Yaa Gyassi which a masterclass in stand alone character/chapter storytelling. But to this, Hasbun's writing itself, based on the translations, was engaging and just as you start to get into the story, it seems to stop. Bu the end of the book , this left me unfulfilled with the overall story as I am still left wondering, what happened on this huge trip the father and others take in looking for ruins that seemed to be a huge turning point for this family, and how/why exactly did the oldest daughter turned into a guerrilla fighter/leader. I had too many questions at the end, but from the writing I can tell the capabilities are there for masterclass writing. Not sure if it is just this book, others by Hasbun are better, or just how the translation went into English.

This felt like more of a sketch than a full-fledged developed novel, which is too bad, since the characters, narrative voice, and atmosphere are all strong, and the writing is lovely. I wish there had been more to this story, but I'll definitely look for Hasbun's writing in the future.

This book was short, but it sure packs a lot of punch. This is the story of a family falling apart piece by piece. The story is told in different view points, but it works very well.

This book took on too much for such a small novella, and I really can't stand the hopping around between protagonists and first, second, and third person POV. The prose is good but this one didn't work for me.
