Reading Nick Hornby felt like reading David Sedaris, if Sedaris was British and obsessed with soccer (football). I went into this book knowing nothing about soccer save whatever I learned from Ted Lasso. (I was excited to see a reference in Hornby's book to Total Football. "I know this!") Reading Fever Pitch felt less like a memoir about watching Arsenal's soccer matches, and more of a reflection on fandom. What over-dedicated fandom does to a person emotionally, to a group, to a child learning how to be a fan and learning how to regulate his emotions, and to young adults learning to navigate life, work, and relationships that require more attention. An excellent read for any fan.
