I find nothing remotely entertaining, alluring, or empowering in tales of infidelity, and the whole story filled me with despair not for Edna, but for all the people whose lives she wrecked in her own selfish lusts. In chapter 36 Edna tells Robert "You are the embodiment of selfishness." If only she had looked in a mirror and come to the same accusation. I couldn't bear to give this book only one star, but that is only because of the great respect I have for Kate Chopin's talent for language. She writes beautifully. Unfortunately what she wrote in that beautiful language was this dour drivel. There was one bit of relatability I saw in Edna, however: at the conclusion of this novel I too wanted to kill myself

This is held up as some masterpiece of classic feminist literature, but I don't see what's so feminist about killing yourself over a man

I seem to love a book with a “bad” mom this year. Truly appreciate this novel being published in 1899. Ideas in this book would be shamed by plenty of pearl-clutching Instagram moms now in 2022.

'The voice of the sea is seductive; never ceasing, whispering, clamoring, murmuring, inviting the soul to wander for a spell in abysses of solitude; to lose itself in mazes of inward contemplation.
The voice of the sea speaks to the soul. The touch of the sea is sensuous, enfolding the body in its soft, close embrace.'
