I am sorry but I cannot rate this book it’s just awful, the main character is an annoying irritating fly that I would love to squish and even her “lover lover” is a bit of a dweeb. God and the story..... zzzzzzzz sorry but I won’t be reading anything from this author again in a hurry

Was hoping for more horror than fantasy. That's on me. But the plot is scattered and the characters are flighty.

Relics by Tim Lebbon wrapped me in it's leather coated arms and welcomed me back into the Urban Fantasy fold. As I rested my head upon the books firm broad chest a contented little sigh escaped my lips.
It had been couple years since I had experienced the strong, musky, not unpleasant smell of Urban Fantasy, and I couldn't help but wonder why I had let so much time and so much zombie fiction come between us.
Never again I whispered as I sunk into it's dark, pages.

I love this concept so, so much. I cannot tell you how much I love this concept and the ideas that grow behind it. The entire story carries that dark, unforgiving atmosphere and makes for a brutal, bloody read. The writing style is strong and lends itself well to the material. There were also a variety of characters and the action was plentiful near the end.
That said, it took me longer than I expected to get into it. For a while, not much seemed to be happening. This offered a realistic entry into the world Lebbon was crafting, but I sort of found myself a little bored at times with certain characters. I wasn't quite sure about some of the motivations, though I did understand most of what was going on.
I would love to know more about the world, since I didn't quite connect with the characters as much as I wanted to. They weren't badly written, but I found Lilou and Mallian to be the most interesting. I would say this is a great foray into urban fantasy and would recommend it to anyone who likes the genre!

I probably should have DNFed this but part of me wanted to find out how the story ended. I've read one of Lebbon's books before and enjoyed it, so after reading the book description for "Relics" I thought this would be something I would love. Clearly, I was wrong.
This was too heavy on the urban fantasy for my tastes with not enough horror. But that's not why I didn't enjoy this book. The characters are two-dimensional and, for the most part, uninteresting. The characters I actually did like barely had any space on the page compared to the main cast. I would have greatly preferred the book if it had been about the adventures of Fat Frederic Malloy.
And there was no character development at all. If there was, maybe I was too distracted by the gratuitous descriptions of satyr genitals to notice. (I found that chapter funny, but it severely detracted from the tension and the potential for horror).
As the main protagonist, Angela was a mostly useless "everyman" who seemed to regret every single interesting thing she did. But she was far from the worst character in this book. Sure, I get that nymphs are supposed to be sexual creatures by nature in fiction, but that was all Lilou was. Her entire personality was "too sexy to exist in public". And for someone who holds so much sexual power over the other characters in the book, she was largely ineffective at trying to convince people to listen to her or do things her way.
This book needed more gangsters and Kin, more horror and torture, and more character development.
