The one Ishiguro book I missed while attempting to go through the whole [so far] canon. This one is clearly a parent to Remains of the Day, containing mannered people speaking politely and obliquely - dancing around a dark secret. But... not quite as interesting.

Probably the weakest of Ishiguro’s works, but the beginnings of his voice are very evident.

The unreliable narrator could have been much more appealing. I enjoyed the way that the story slowly unfolded, but I could have used some more details. The narrative was very slow and measured, with little flashbacks that illustrated the actual story. It does have some subtle details that emerge in an interesting way and take time to seep in. Maybe if I knew about Japan circa WWII it would have had more appeal.

Exceedingly well written exposé of post-war Japan and one man's trials of dealing with his own crosses that he bears. Solid 4 stars!
