The sequel to [book: Dairy Queen] -- DJ's been allowed to play on the football team, she's dating Brian the rival QB even if he won't acknowledge her in public with his friends from his high school, and she's having a great year, but everything starts to fall apart when DJ gets hurt in a game, and then her brother Win (who's still not speaking to the family) suffers a spinal injury in a nationally televised broadcast game. DJ's mother's falling apart and her father can't cope with Win's injury, so once again it falls to 17-year-old DJ to hold the family together, to try and get Win to cope with his injury and the family. This one really broke my heart -- Brian is a real jerk and DJ doesn't understand a lot of his behavior, and I read this immediately in the wake of Kevin Everett's spinal injury in the NFL so the injury subplot really made my heart and head hurt. DJ's smart and resilient, though, and her relationship with her brothers (specifically with Curtis, the youngest Schwenk, and Bill, the second child) is a great thread through the book. I hope Murdock writes a third in this series; I want to know what happens to DJ after all of this.

I really enjoyed "The Off Season", though it wasn't as good as "Dairy Queen". My biggest complaints are the lack of DJ playing football (I was really looking forward to that!) and Brian being a complete jerk! I really hope he either changes his attitude or DJ finds someone else in "Front & Center".

Picking up where Dairy Queen left off, DJ Schwenk has earned a spot on her high school football team and has to figure out how to navigate this with her feelings toward Brian, the rival high school quarterback. When injury hits, DJ has some decisions to make about her future in sports. But, when a bigger injury hits her family, life as she has known it seems to be flipped upside down, having DJ needing to take on more responsibility and be part of the family's strength. The main plot line is again about DJ, but Amber, Brian, and Curtis are all back and add to the overall feel of the story.

This is another sweet book, and I was glad it picked up right where Dairy Queen finished, so the characters continued to live on and I got to see what happened with them. :) The injury that rocks the family really brings them all closer, while also showing DJ's real strengths and support of her family.

The second book in the Dairy Queen series picks up almost right where we left off in book one. D.J. starts school for her junior year. Can she juggle football and schoolwork?!

I was worried I wouldn't like this book as much as the first but I actually found it quite enjoyable. D.J. continues to be an awesome protagonist. I love how smart and capable she is and I love that she doesn't even notice it. It makes her very realistic and relatable. Where's the next book?!

could have been way better. too much boring drama

I think maybe the reason I don't love this author is that she writes in a style very close to my own. I know my own writing to be mediocre, so I get bugged by Murdock. Reasonable? Maybe not. But that's what I came up with when trying to figure out what it was about her style that irritated me so much. That said, I breezed through the book and liked it just as much as the first. It's a fun story, and the characters are likable. They have foibles that are easy to empathize with, and mostly act their age. They deal with a lot of issues, which is realistic for today's teens. I like D.J. and am interested in finding out what happens to her in the next book.

Loved it. DJ Schwenk is my favorite.

DJ!!!!!!!!!!! OH HOW I ADORE HER. tbh i didn't expect to care so much about this series??? but gosh with this book it has found its way into my heart and dj is one of the loveliest and most realistic female teen protagonists i've had the pleasure of reading. it's impossible not to root for her. also yes i might have teared up a couple of times (the same goes for the 3rd book).

I don't have much to say about this book. Brian is being a jerkwad in this book, though. I feel like she's going to forgive him, though. that doesn't mean I have to, Does it? Amber and Dale are so cute. At first I thought D.J. would be jealous of Dale's relationship with Amber, but she turns out to like her. Halfway through the book when D.J. said, "sitting here in the hospital writing this," I was like WHAT THE HECK!?! WHY IS SHE IN THE HOSPITAL?? Most of the time, this is going to sound a little rude, maybe, I pictured Win laying in his bed like fat lump. I don't know why, but that's what I saw... I don't get Bill and Aaron's nicknames. Milkshake and Tinkerbell?
